Pristine beaches, a fabulous climate and great value for money are just some of the reasons why generations of South African families return to holiday on the KZN South Coast every summer. Add the laid-back, unpretentious hospitality and overall warmth of the people who live here, and it’s no wonder the region’s enduring appeal attracts visitors to this part of the world… to return year after year.

What sets the KZN South Coast apart is the diversity of its beaches. Some are bustling hubs of activity, like Margate Beach with its lively promenade, while others such as Trafalgar and Umzumbe, offer tranquil, unspoiled beauty. Whether you’re a surfer, a family looking for safe swimming spots, or a walker seeking a long stretch of sandy shoreline, there’s a beach for everyone.
The Wildlife and Environmental Society of South Africa (Wessa), announced in October 2023 that Marina, Trafalgar, Southport, Umzumbe and Hibberdene beaches have been awarded the full Blue Flag status – the only beaches to hold the status in KZN. (Water quality is listed as one of the criteria for Blue Flag status, among other strict environmental, educational, safety, and accessibility criteria that have to be met and maintained.)
A melting pot of cultures
From its Zulu heritage to the Indian and British influences, the region’s culture is a tapestry woven from many threads. Visitors have the opportunity to immerse themselves in this cultural richness, from attending traditional Zulu ceremonies to savouring delicious Indian cuisine.
The rich cultural history of the Zulu nation can be experienced at Ntelezi Msani Heritage Centre in Mthwalume, with the multi trails offered as part of the KwaNzimakwe Experience and the Nyandezulu Experience with its 80m high waterfall, both offering immersive cultural excursions in the beautiful hinterland.
For a unique nature-based heritage experience, visit the KwaXolo Caves, home to historical San rock paintings dating back centuries.

Nature reserves full of incredible biodiversity
The region is home to several nature reserves and parks, including the Oribi Gorge Nature Reserve and the Vernon Crookes Nature Reserve. These sanctuaries are teeming with indigenous flora and fauna.
Just 40kms inland from Umthunzi is Lake Eland Game Reserve – a fun-filled day trip for the whole family. This private game reserve is one of the South Coast’s most-loved tourism gems.
Of course, the highlight for many is the opportunity to witness the majestic humpback whales during their annual migration along the coastline. The Sardine Run is another natural spectacle that draws visitors to the region, as millions of sardines migrate along the coast, attracting dolphins, sharks, and seabirds in a feeding frenzy.

Set on 24ha of beautifully landscaped indigenous gardens with stunning sea views, Crocworld is home to four different crocodilian species, a bird section, and a snake tunnel housing species from every continent except Antarctica.
No shortage of thrilling outdoor activities

Whether it’s hiking in the Oribi Gorge, abseiling down its cliffs, or going horseback riding along the beach, there are countless opportunities to experience the natural beauty and adventure of the KZN South Coast.
Furthermore, golf enthusiasts are in for a treat, with world-class golf courses like the Southbroom Golf Course and the San Lameer Golf Course offering stunning views and challenging fairways.
