When Easter Fun and Wedding Season Collides

“The very first Easter taught us this: that life never ends and love never dies.”– Kate McGahan, Author and spiritual counsellor
April must be the fun-nest month of the whole year. Not only do we start it off in a good mood – who hasn’t been caught out by a good old April fool’s joke – but the month is also sprinkled with lots of holiday moments, ranging from religious to political celebrations. It’s the one month in the year where you can gain maximum “off’’ days with minimum official leave days.
It also makes a wonderful month for wedding celebrations – with so many public holidays it frees up some travel time for family and friends who need to hit the road to join your celebrations. The worst of the scorching summer weather is over and we are easing into moderate autumn temperatures. The long weekends are also perfect for extended destination wedding weekends at exotic beach destinations such as Umthunzi Hotel.
If you feel that way inclined, you can even include some wonderful Easter décor in your wedding décor. In fact, we recommend it. Show me the person who doesn’t love a cuddly bunny and I will show you a hardened heart.
April fools wedding day
Are you planning to get married on April 1? While getting married is a serious event and one should treat it with the utmost respect, why not have a bit of fun? A word of warning though – leave the pranking to the couple, as unexpected pranks by guests may not go down well at all.
- Replace the groom’s pants with the exact item but only two sizes smaller, and watch him squirm. Get one of his best men to film this. The best April fool’s joke ever. Do not, we repeat, do not try the same joke on the bride and her dress. It will be a disaster of epic proportions.
- Replace the ring on the ring bearer’s cushion with a huge lollipop candy ring. Imagine the bride’s face. Just make sure you have the real one very close by.
- Grab some Tippex and write HELP ME on the soles of the groom’s feet – this only works if you know that the couple will be kneeling. If you plan well ahead, there are even ‘help me’ stickers made especially for shoes, for sale online!
Keeping the adults and kids busy
Having a good old Easter egg hunt must be the easiest way to keep the kids busy at a wedding. Some of the adults may even join in – it’s a brilliant idea to keep everyone occupied while the official wedding photos are taken before moving into the venue. Once the egg hunt is over, the Easter bunny may even make a guest appearance for the kids. It will certainly make for unique wedding photos!
A hoppy wedding cake
Are you oh-so-over the 3 -storey wedding cakes with plastic bride and groom toppers? Then Easter gives you a good excuse to add a dose of cuteness to your wedding cake. We love the bunny cake toppers and sweet speckled Easter eggs displayed on top of the wedding cake. How lovely are these examples:
Easter-themed wedding place cards
There are loads of free Easter printables available online which makes it really easy for you to download and personalise your place settings – Click here for a few samples. Want to step it up a notch? Then boil eggs and do calligraphy names on the eggs as name cards.
Add a bit of gold paint for glamour. The eggs would need a ‘nest’ to stand in, so have some moss, a bowl or glass ready. We cannot guarantee how long boiled eggs last so keep a time limit on this.
Easter biscuits or speckled eggs favours
If you have baking skills or a family who would love to be involved in the wedding, the little Easter-themed biscuits are a wonderful contribution. Small personalised jars with speckled eggs also make great gifts to take home and nibble on every night while remembering the fun wedding.
Easter wedding flowers
Hydrangeas (or Christmas roses, as they are affectionately referred to in South Africa) are native to Asia and America and grow well in almost all parts of South Africa, from our coastal areas to the interior.
The great news is that they flower in March and April and make breathtakingly beautiful wedding centerpieces, bridal bouquets and chairs decorations. It is important to note that hydrangeas can be tricky in bouquets since they need a lot of water and will wilt if they are out of water for more than a few hours.
Feeling inspired for an Easter April wedding? If you are not tying the knot this April, we hope that this blog inspired you with some fun ideas for your Easter weekend and Easter celebrations. To the 2023 brides out there – let’s check your date and start planning – 2023 is closer than you think and only has so many long weekends.
