craft beer

There’s no point hiding it. We’re only a few days away from one of our favourite events of the year, our annual Craft Beer, Food & Wine Festival! With tickets having nearly sold out, we figured we would make your day all the more better, with our 7 utterly useless (but oh-so-enjoyable) craft beer facts!

1. The Babylonians Knew Best

According to the history books, the Babylonians were one of the first cultures to start brewing beer. They took so much pride in their booze, that anyone judged to have brewed a poor quality beer was sentenced, by law to drown in the stuff!

2. The Vikings

The Vikings believed that when they died, they would be rewarded with a giant goat by their Gods. With, wait for it, udders filled with an unending supply of beer. We imagine the Vikings were a pretty happy bunch as a result!

3. Darker Bottles = Better Craft Beer

Ever wondered why beer bottles aren’t all the same colour? Wonder no more! According to brewers, beer that is stored in darker bottles are less exposed to light that spoils the brew. In South Africa, we associate green bottled beer with premium beers, when in fact the brown bottles are actually better for the beer!

4. Craft Beer Can Be Diet Friendly!

Turns out that not all malts used in beer contains gluten. That’s right our beloved banting friends, malt isn’t always gluten based as believed! In fact, any grain can be ‘malted’, meaning craft beers made from things like maize or rice aren’t as bad for the belly as you might think!

5. Cenosillicaphobia Isn’t A Fear Of Cenos!

In fact, it’s the fear of an empty glass. We all have a few friends who are clearly absolutely petrified by this, so luckily our Craft Beer event next month has more than enough beer on tap to ensure that no one has any empty glasses to fear!

6. Craft Beer Has Been Around For Centuries

In 2010, the world’s oldest drinkable beer was found stored away in a Baltic shipwreck that was believed to have sailed over 200 years ago! We’re not sure we’d give it a taste, but pretty neat nonetheless!

7. Fancy Being Paid In Beer?

Well in ancient Egypt, that’s exactly what used to happen! Workers living in and around Giza would often receive rations of beer up to three times a day as payment! Now, we wonder who we could speak to in HR to arrange our salaries to be paid in beer?

Keen to come and learn a few more useless beer facts? Or just want to knock a few back? Come and join us for our Sunday lunch and wash down some great food with some good craft beer!
